General Questions
What is Kampo medicine?
Whats the different Kampo and Kampo medicine
Kampo refers broadly to the traditional Japanese herbal medicine system, including its philosophy, diagnostic methods, and use of herbs.
Kampo Medicine specifically means the evidence-based, clinical application of Kampo, integrated into modern healthcare in Japan, with standardized formulas prescribed by doctors or pharmacists.
Is Kampo medicine same as Chinese medicine?
What is the difference between Kampo medicine and Western medicine?
Western medicine often utilizes synthetic drugs, which are typically single-component medications designed to target specific symptoms. While highly effective, they often require multiple drugs to address complex conditions involving several symptoms.
Kampo medicine is multi-component, combining various herbal ingredients. This characteristic allows Kampo formulas to address multiple symptoms with a single prescription in some cases.
Is Kampo medicine a supplement?
Yes, in the U.S. Herbs are categorized as supplements, which are dietary products intended to complement nutrition. However, most herbal manufacturers specializing in Eastern herbal medicine only allow practitioners to purchase from them, as extensive herbal knowledge is needed. Therefore, we highly recommend getting a consultation from a trained practitioner.
No, in Japan. Kampo medicine is a pharmaceutical product with therapeutic effects, not a supplement. Kampo medicine is strictly regulated, recognized as a medicine, and can only be prescribed by licensed physicians with established therapeutic effects.
How can I find the right Kampo medicine for my symptoms?
It’s essential to consult with a practitioner who can properly analyze your symptoms. Many Kampo medicines are effective only when they match an individual’s unique constitution and symptoms. To determine this, Kampo practitioners use specific diagnostic tools unique to Kampo medicine. Based on these principles, they select the most suitable formula for each person.
Can Kampo medicine be used for minor health issues that are not serious yet?
Yes. Kampo medicine is designed to enhance the body’s natural healing power by focusing on restoring overall balance in the body and drawing out its innate strength.
Through the unique synergy of combined herbs, Kampo aims to help improve not only specific symptoms but also overall well-being. This makes it effective for addressing vague complaints like unexplained discomfort, fatigue, or a pre-symptomatic feeling—issues that may not appear in test results but still impact daily life.
Who is most suitable to use Kampo medicine?
Kampo medicine is suitable for individuals of all ages and genders, as it’s tailored to each person’s unique constitution. However, it is particularly beneficial for:
- Older adults: To address age-related frailty, low appetite, or overall weakness.
- Women: For managing menopausal symptoms, hormonal imbalances, and vague complaints like fatigue or discomfort.
It’s also widely used for common issues like colds, constipation, headaches, and fatigue, making it versatile for anyone seeking a holistic approach to health.
Do Kampo medicines have side effects?
It depends, but yes, they can in some cases. If you notice symptoms like fever, shortness of breath, coughing, fatigue, rash, abdominal pain, swelling, or muscle stiffness, stop taking the herbs and consult a practitioner immediately.
When using multiple Kampo medicines, be cautious about excessive intake of certain ingredients, such as licorice, which may increase the risk of side effects. Always inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking.
Are Kampo medicines bitter and hard to take?
It depends on the herbal ingredients. Some herbs may taste bitter, while others have sweetness or sourness due to their components.
Since Kampo are tailored to each person’s constitution, those that match your body may feel easier to take. Additionally, we offer various forms, including granules and decoctions, to suit your preferences.
